Russian Ships Conduct Exercises Again with China and Iran

Warships from the Russian Pacific Fleet are conducting joint exercises with units from Iran and China in the Gulf of Oman. The maneuver is expected to last until Friday. This is not the first joint exercise of the naval forces.

Russia Moves Part of Pacific Fleet for Joint Maneuvers in the Gulf of Oman

Russia has relocated a part of its Pacific Fleet for maneuvers with warships from Iran and China in the Gulf of Oman. The ships led by the cruiser “Varyag” have arrived at the Iranian port of Chabahar, as reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense to the Interfax agency. The exercise “Marine Belt Security 2024” is taking place in the Gulf of Oman.

Chinese Send Guided Missile Destroyer

The maneuver is aimed at “jointly upholding regional maritime security,” stated the Chinese Ministry of Defense on the social media platform WeChat. According to reports, a guided missile destroyer, a frigate, and a supply ship will participate in the exercise. China has been increasingly building modern warships in recent years, showcasing its presence abroad with this move.

Objectives and Significance for Maritime Trade

The objectives of the exercise, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim, include combating piracy and maritime terrorism, humanitarian operations, information exchange in search and rescue operations, and sharing operational and tactical experiences. The exercise is scheduled to take place from today until Friday.

The waters between Iran and Oman hold great significance for maritime trade. The Strait of Hormuz, connecting the Gulf of Oman to the Persian Gulf, is considered one of the most critical sea routes for global oil exports.

Continued Military Cooperation and Russian Presence

Russia, Iran, and China have previously conducted joint military exercises. Despite international sanctions, Moscow and Tehran have significantly expanded their military and economic ties. Russia aims to demonstrate its broad presence in various regions through participation in maneuvers, despite its ongoing conflict with Ukraine for over two years.
